This blog has narrowed down the options and compiled our top off-roading destinations by state and geographical location. Get ready to buckle up, hold tight and explore the wild and rugged terrains of the Northeast like never before! Connecticut: Filley and Jericho Roads, Haddam
Let's start in Connecticut, where you can try off-roading in Cockaponset State Forest. The Filley and Jericho Roads have a few obstacles but are still relatively easy. And if you're looking for a more challenging trail, Mootland Road is the perfect spot. You'll find a mix of dirt hills, slopes, and rock formations here.
Delaware: Muddy Nutz Playground, Dover
In Delaware, you'll find your off-roading fun at Muddy Nutz Playground. It's a small but exciting 4x4 spot with obstacles and mud bogs. Don't forget to bring a tow strap or winch; if you're looking for more, join an off-roading club and explore private trails.
Maine: Hemond’s MX & Off-road Park, Minot
Off-roaders in Maine can explore Hemond’s MX & Off-road Park, a 600-acre playground. It offers 10+ miles of off-road fun, 400 feet of elevation change, many obstacles, and a massive motocross track. You'll also have direct access to the Minot ATV trails and a campground with yearly special events.
Maryland, Frederick Watershed Area, Frederick
Maryland's premier off-roading destination is Frederick Watershed Area, a 7,000-acre forest. The 11-mile road is excellent for all driver levels, with gravel, dirt, ruts, and a few rocky sections. You'll love the scenery, wildlife, clear streams, and hiking trails along the way.
Massachusetts: Cape Cod National Seashore, Barnstable County
Take your 4x4 for a spin on the beaches of Cape Cod National Seashore! Here, you'll find 5 miles of sandy trails that are only accessible by 4x4 and AWD vehicles. Remember to get an Off-Road Vehicle permit and plan your trip between April and November.
New Hampshire: Jericho Mountain 4x4 Trail, Berlin
In New Hampshire, you'll find the ultimate 4-wheeling retreat in the Jericho Mountains. Take on the 4x4 specific trail, which is around 2.5 miles long and packed with rocks and technical sections. If you're a beginner, there are plenty of intermediate courses to explore. Plus, you'll love the scenic outlooks and recreational opportunities at Jericho Lake.
New Jersey: Wharton State Forest, Hammonton
Wharton State Forest is the perfect spot for off-roading in New Jersey. It stretches over 110,000 acres and has over 500 miles of unpaved and diverse roads. Just ensure you stay on designated trails and pack your all-terrain tires, as the area has many puddles and mud holes during the rainy season.
New York: Hunter Mountain, Hunter
Over in New York, Hunter Mountain is the spot for 4X4 fun. Here, you'll find miles of trails for beginner and intermediate drivers, with stream crossings, muddy sections, rock and log crawls, and a 3,200-foot summit. You can book a trip with Hunter Mountain’s 4X4 Off-Road Adventure to get access.
Pennsylvania: Rausch Creek Off-Road Park, Pine Grove
Head over to Rausch Creek Off-Road Park for an unforgettable off-roading experience. This 3,000-acre park has a mixture of green, blue, and black trails, so drivers of every level can find something to enjoy. You'll find rocky sections, bowls, and hills, but remember the 2-vehicle rule!
Rhode Island: East Beach, Charlestown
East Beach is one of Rhode Island's few places to go off-roading. You'll find a sandy stretch where you can drive up to the water. To explore the area, you'll need a beach vehicle permit and stick to authorized trails. To access more challenging trails, you must contact an off-road club and find their secret locations.
Vermont: Chateauguay, Bridgewater
Vermont class 4 roads can be found at Chateauguay. You'll find wet rocks, slippery logs, rivers, and tight squeezes here. Plus, the views from the top are unbeatable. So, if you're ready for an unforgettable 4-wheeling experience, this is the place to go!
