What Is Moo Moo Subaru?

Have You Been Moo’d Lately? Inside the Moo Moo Subaru Movement

You may have noticed something pretty peculiar if you've walked through a parking lot recently - little toy cows perched on top of Subaru vehicles or tucked within the door handles.

What gives? This strange phenomenon is part of a growing movement called Moo Moo Subaru, in which Subaru owners "moo" each other by leaving small bovine figures and explanatory cards on strangers' Subies.

It all started as a joke among friends, but quickly took on a life of its own. Much like the famous Duck Duck Jeep game popular among Jeep owners, Moo Moo Subaru offers Subaru drivers a way to celebrate their shared enthusiasm for the brand. And with over 60,000 members in the main Facebook group , this moo-tiful trend is well on its way to mainstream fame.

So what's behind this cow-tastic craze? Let's take a closer look at the origins and explosive growth of Moo Moo Subaru in the community.

Moo-ving From Joke to Movement

The playful inspiration for Moo Moo Subaru came from Staci Huckins, a Subaru Crosstrek owner in Michigan.

After seeing Jeep owners happily "ducking" each other's Wranglers with rubber duckies, Huckins jokingly told her friend who owned a Jeep that she would start "ducking" Subarus since they were clearly superior vehicles.

Her friend informed her ducking was reserved solely for Wranglers. But Huckins decided Subaru drivers deserved their own version of leaving surprise toys for fellow owners. When researching ideas for a Subaru mascot, she learned the Japanese name "Subaru" refers to the Pleiades star cluster, part of the Taurus constellation represented by a bull.

The bovine connection, plus the fact Subaru rhymes with "moo," cemented Huckins' decision to have Subie owners "moo" each other with toy cows. She launched the Moo Moo Subaru Facebook group in early 2023, and soon, complete strangers across the country were bonding through this silly game.

The Moo-mentum Is Building

Part of the appeal of Moo Moo Subaru is its inclusiveness—it welcomes all Subaru models, unlike ducking which focuses on Wranglers.

And Subaru enjoys a reputation for having some of the most loyal and enthusiastic fans. According to J.D. Power data, nearly 63% of Subaru SUV buyers stick with the brand for their next purchase – showing the staying power of the community and loyalty towards the brand.

But beyond just having a love for Subarus, Moo Moo Subaru also promotes positivity and kindness among its members. From sharing photos of their beloved Subies to offering support and advice on car maintenance, the group has become a tight-knit community where people can connect over a shared passion.

So if you notice a toy cow accompanied by a punny, "You've been moo'd!" note on your Subaru, join the herd and moo it forward!
