The story of KC Lites starts in 1970 with Pete Brown, an off-roading enthusiast who noticed a - shall we say – glaring problem – the inadequate lighting for night driving. After all, who wants to spend their off-roading adventures in the dark?

Determined to find a solution, Pete began experimenting in his garage in El Cajon, California. He wanted a light that could withstand the harsh conditions of off-road driving and provide exceptional visibility.

His first creation was a pair of Daylighters, using aircraft landing bulbs fitted into sturdy housings. Brown noticed that the severe shaking and bouncing of off-roading created a flickering effect in regular bulbs, so a more robust housing was necessary. 

Working with a team from GE, Brown went back to the drawing board to redesign everything from the lighting style to the sealed beams, light filaments, and even the wattage. This brought the first road-worthy version of the Daylighter to life.

These early lights were a game-changer, offering unprecedented brightness and durability. Not only did the Daylighters enhance the off-roading experience, but they also caught the attention of other enthusiasts and sparked the birth of KC HiLiTES.

Word quickly spread through the off-roading community, and the KC Lites brand was born.
