The electronic locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select, and Crawl Control systems further enhance its off-road prowess – all features we were eager to put to the test.

Under the Hood

The TRD Rally Package comes with Toyota's impressive i-FORCE twin-turbo V6 engine, pushing out a robust 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. This powerplant is paired with a smooth 10-speed automatic transmission that seems to always find the right gear for any terrain.

During our test drive, we were particularly impressed with the engine's responsive throttle and abundant low-end torque. The twin-turbo setup eliminates any hint of lag, delivering immediate power whenever you need it. Merging onto highways felt smooth, and the truck had more than enough muscle to tackle steep inclines when we took it off-road.

What really stood out to us was how Toyota engineers managed to balance raw power with surprising efficiency. The Tundra with the TRD Rally Package achieves around a combined 19 mpg (17 city/22 highway). 

For a full-size truck with this level of capability, that's impressive fuel economy that makes longer adventures more feasible without constantly searching for the next gas station.

During our test drive, we deliberately sought out challenging terrain to put this truck through its paces, and it handled everything we threw at it..

The Bilstein shocks deserve special mention here. They’re specifically tuned for the TRD Rally Package to provide exceptional articulation and control over rough terrain while maintaining composed on-road manners. The result is a truck that feels planted and stable.

Another feature that impressed us was how easy it was to engage the 4WD system. Depending on the terrain, we could switch between 2WD, 4H, and 4L with a simple dial twist. Activating the electronic locking rear differential was just as intuitive – simply press a button on the dash, and power is distributed to both rear wheels for maximum traction.

The Multi-Terrain Select system is also outstanding. During our test, we cycled through various modes – including Mud, Dirt, and Sand – and each delivered noticeably different performance characteristics optimized for that specific terrain. Paired with Crawl Control (essentially off-road cruise control), the truck almost makes technical off-roading feel too easy.

The Little Details That Caught Our Eyes

Sometimes, it's the little things that make the biggest impression, and the TRD Rally Package is full of thoughtful details that enhance both form and function. 

Take, for example, the wheel center caps we spotted during our drive – featuring Toyota's heritage tri-color logo in vibrant yellow, orange, and red against a sleek black background. This small detail perfectly captures the spirit of this package.

The aluminum sport pedals add visual appeal and functional grip, while the red TRD start/stop button gives you a little thrill every time you fire up the engine.

Even the more practical details haven't been overlooked. The mud guards don't just look good – they keep debris from damaging the paint during aggressive off-road driving. The high-clearance exhaust tip prevents damage during steep departure angles, and the pre-wired auxiliary switches make adding aftermarket accessories easy.
