SEMA Battle of the Builders 4x4 Category: Top Builds & Trends

SEMA Battle of the Builders 2025

SEMA's 4x4 Stars – Best Builds and New Trends at Battle of the Builders

Every November, Las Vegas becomes the epicenter of automotive customization. Why? Because SEMA rolls into town.

Right at the heart of this massive trade show sits Battle of the Builders (BOTB). It’s one of our top picks of the entire week, and for good reason. BOTB brings together some of the most talented builders in the industry to compete for the title of “Builder of the Year.”

While hot rods and exotics grab headlines, the 4 Wheel Drive & Off-Road category consistently delivers the most practical innovation.

These aren't just pretty trucks – they're adventure-ready machines pushing the boundaries of what's possible on four wheels.

The 4x4 Category

The 4WD & Off-Road division at BOTB has evolved far beyond lifted trucks with big tires.

The modern competitors are bringing their best – including complete adventure platforms that integrate cutting-edge suspension and overland gear. They also showcase some technology that’s been trickling down to production vehicles.

We can look at what might come by looking back at last year. 2024's 4x4 finalists highlighted several key trends.

Custom Jeeps, Broncos, and Toyota Land Cruisers typically dominate the field, with each featuring plenty of nice things to look at: bespoke rack systems, integrated lighting, and recovery gear.

Standout builds included "Vulcan," a 2024 Toyota Sequoia TRD PRO transformed into an overlanding beast. The build featured everything from custom bumpers with integrated compressors to trail navigation systems seamlessly built into the dash.

Another crowd favorite was Zachary Deals' twin-turbo Land Cruiser. This build captured the current trend of blending classic styling with modern performance. The turbocharged powerplant delivered serious trail power while maintaining the iconic Land Cruiser silhouette that enthusiasts love.

Innovation on Display

What makes SEMA’s BOTB's 4x4 category so much fun? It’s the level of engineering innovation.

These builders are hard at work creating solutions to real-world problems – and they look great while they’re doing it. Some of our favorites include:

  • Electric winches integrated into custom bumpers save weight and improve approach angles.

  • Modular camping systems transform from cargo haulers to complete base camps in minutes.

  • Advanced suspension systems automatically adjust between crawling and high-speed desert running.

The attention to detail is impressive. Many builders will machine their own custom parts and design proprietary mounting systems.

Some of them end up creating solutions that major manufacturers later adopt. (It's not uncommon to see technology debut at BOTB appear on factory vehicles years later.)

The Competition Process

BOTB's judging process is intense – which makes sure only the best make it to the main stage. Throughout the scoring process, industry judges will actually walk the show floor during setup. They’ll then end up selecting 10 finalists from each of the four categories:

  1. 4 Wheel Drive & Off-Road

  2. Hot Rod & Hot Rod Truck

  3. Sport Compact, Import Performance, Luxury & Exotic

  4. Young Guns (builders under 29)

Throughout the week, these 40 vehicles get winnowed down to the final four – one from each category. And in a unique twist, the builders themselves vote to determine the overall winner.

Other Category Highlights Beyond 4x4

While we're focused on four-wheelers, there are plenty of other categories bringing their own innovation to the table.

The Hot Rod & Hot Rod Truck category claimed 2024's overall win with Noah Alexander's '68 Dodge Charger. This category showcases classic American muscle reimagined with modern performance and fabrication techniques.

Sport Compact and Exotic builders push different boundaries. Electric swaps, hybrid conversions, and luxury restomods dominate this space. The engineering challenges of electrifying a classic or improving on a supercar create unique solutions.

Young Guns is still one of the most exciting categories for fresh perspectives. This division puts builders under 29 in the spotlight, and their builds often challenge traditional approaches, bringing new techniques and aesthetics to established platforms.

What Makes a Winner at SEMA BOTB?

Winning BOTB will require more than just deep pockets or flashy paint. The judges are on the hunt, looking for innovation and execution, as well as problem-solving.

The best builds tell a story – why this vehicle, why these modifications, and how they work together.

In the 4x4 category, functionality weighs heavily. A beautiful truck that can't perform won't beat a capable rig with thoughtful engineering. Builders who create new solutions rather than simply installing existing products stand out.

Attention to detail separates good builds from winners. Custom-machined parts, perfectly integrated systems, and flawless execution catch judges' eyes. But it's the innovative thinking – solving problems in new ways – that ultimately wins.

Looking Ahead

As BOTB approaches its next iteration, several trends are emerging in the 4x4 space.

We have a feeling that electric and hybrid powertrains are going to keep gaining traction. While full EVs are still rare in serious off-road builds, hybrid systems offering instant torque and extended range are appearing more frequently.

Sustainable building practices are becoming important. Builders using recycled materials, lightweight components, and efficient designs score points for forward thinking.

The overland adventure trend shows no signs of slowing. Expect more builds focused on extended travel, with integrated living systems, advanced navigation, and self-sufficiency features.

Technology integration continues to advance. We're seeing more builders create custom interfaces linking vehicle systems, navigation, and communication into unified platforms.

We Love the BOTB Effect

Battle of the Builders influences the entire automotive aftermarket. Products showcased here often become next year's must-have accessories. Techniques pioneered by builders get adopted industry-wide.

For the 4x4 community specifically, BOTB drives innovation in overlanding gear, suspension technology, and vehicle integration. Major manufacturers watch closely, often recruiting builders or licensing their innovations.

The competition also spotlights the builders themselves. Winners gain industry recognition, business opportunities, and platforms to showcase their skills. Many successful shops trace their growth to BOTB exposure.
