How We Make Officially Licensed Apparel: From Design to Your Door
From Sketch to Doorstep: How Our Officially Licensed Apparel Is Made
When you see "officially licensed" on a Goats Trail tee, it means something. It means Toyota, Polaris® and Arctic Cat® has given us permission to use its name, logos and vehicle designs, and that every design has been reviewed and approved by the brand before it ever reaches you.
We're a family of off-road and snowmobile enthusiasts based in America's Heartland (Goats Trail), and we get a lot of questions about how our gear comes together. So here's a behind-the-scenes look at how a Goats Trail shirt goes from an idea to your front door.
Step 1: Earning the License
Before we can print a single Toyota TRD logo or Polaris RZR graphic, we have to be approved as a licensee. That means applying to each brand's licensing program, showing we can meet their quality standards, and signing an agreement that spells out exactly how their trademarks can be used.
Today Goats Trail is licensed by:
- Toyota, including Toyota, TRD, 4Runner, Tacoma, Tundra and Land Cruiser designs
- Polaris, including Polaris® off-road, snowmobile and Slingshot™ apparel
- Arctic Cat®, including off-road and snowmobile apparel
You'll see the licensing notice for each brand at the bottom of every page on our site. For example, our Arctic Cat license number is printed right there in the footer.
Step 2: Designing and Getting Approval
Every design starts with the people who'll wear it. We're riders too, so ideas come from the trail, the snowmobile lodge, car shows, and a lot of customer requests.
- Sketch and concept. Our in-house designers and a handful of dedicated freelancers sketch concepts around the vehicles and moments riders love most, whether that's a vintage Land Cruiser or a ZR800 kicking up snow.
- Follow the brand's rules. Each brand has a style guide covering logo placement, colors, spacing and how its vehicles can be shown. Our artwork has to follow it to the letter.
- Submit for approval. The finished design goes to the brand's licensing team for review. They may approve it, ask for changes, or send it back to the drawing board.
- Sample and final sign-off. Even after a design is approved on paper, the brand still signs off on the final physical garment before it's allowed to go up for sale.
This whole approval cycle can take months, which is part of why new designs don't appear overnight, but it's also exactly why you can trust that a licensed design looks precisely the way the brand intended it to.
Step 3: Choosing Materials and Printing
A great design needs a shirt that holds up on the trail. Our tees are built on durable Gildan blanks (Goats Trail). Many use heavyweight 6 oz. 100% cotton with taped neck and shoulders so they keep their shape, and they're dyed with OEKO-TEX certified low-impact dyes.
Once the blank is chosen, every item is printed and shipped from our facility in Wisconsin, made to order rather than mass-produced ahead of time. Each print run then goes through a dedicated quality check covering color accuracy, graphic placement, and ink coverage before it's folded, packed, and stocked for shipping.
Step 4: From Our Shelves to Your Door
Once you place an order, our team picks, packs and ships it, and every order ships within 3 business days. You'll get tracking information from order confirmation to delivery, and standard shipping is free on orders over $69 (excluding Alaska and Hawaii). Need it faster? Rush processing and delivery are available for an extra fee.
And if something isn't right, every purchase is backed by our satisfaction guarantee (Goats Trail). See our returns policy for details.
Why Officially Licensed Matters
You've probably seen knockoff Toyota or Polaris® shirts on marketplace sites for a few bucks less. Here's what you get when you buy licensed instead:
- Authentic designs. The logos, colors and vehicle art are exactly what the brand approved, not a blurry copy.
- Consistent quality. Licensees have to meet brand standards, so you're not rolling the dice on thin fabric or a print that peels after two washes.
- Support for the brands you love. A portion of every licensed sale goes back to the brand through royalties, supporting the companies that build the machines you ride.
- Support for a small business. Every order also supports a family-owned company run by people who ride.
